Overview
Myanmar’s conflict escalated after the military takeover on 1 February 2021 and broadened further after coordinated offensives beginning in late 2023. It is not a simple two-sided war: armed actors include the Myanmar military, local resistance forces and numerous ethnic armed organisations with separate command structures and political goals.
Displacement
UNHCR’s Myanmar situation portal recorded 1,627,471 estimated Myanmar refugees and asylum-seekers in selected Asia-Pacific host countries as of 30 June 2026. UNHCR also publishes regular internal-displacement maps and notes that humanitarian access is constrained in many parts of Myanmar.
