Israel–Hamas War and Gaza Conflict

Overview

The current war began after the Hamas-led attacks in Israel on 7 October 2023 and Israel’s subsequent large-scale military campaign in the Gaza Strip. The conflict has caused extensive civilian casualties, destruction and repeated displacement. Humanitarian access, water, sanitation, shelter and health services remain central concerns.

Current humanitarian picture

In its 11 September 2026 situation report, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said 91% of assessed households in Gaza faced moderate to high water insecurity. OCHA also reported continuing airstrikes and other attacks, shortages of critical medical supplies and constraints on humanitarian operations.

How CAWT handles casualty figures

OCHA explicitly notes when casualty numbers come from the Gaza Ministry of Health or Israeli authorities and have not been independently verified by the UN. CAWT preserves those source attributions instead of presenting the figures as a single independently verified total.
