Overview
War broke out in Sudan on 15 April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Fighting has affected Khartoum, Darfur and other regions and has produced one of the world’s largest displacement emergencies.
Displacement
UNHCR states that the conflict has forced nearly 13 million people to flee their homes. Its Sudan emergency page lists 10.1 million internally displaced people and over 3.2 million people who fled Sudan to neighbouring countries; the page labels those headline population figures as updated in December 2025.
Verification note
National casualty totals are difficult to establish across fragmented front lines and access constraints. CAWT therefore avoids presenting a single war-wide death toll unless the methodology and reference period are explicit.
