Ukraine: August civilian casualties remain at elevated 2026 levels
UN monitors say the first eight months of 2026 produced more verified civilian casualties than all of 2025.
The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) says at least 372 civilians were killed and 2,349 injured in Ukraine in August 2026.
For the first eight months of 2026, the mission verified 2,222 civilian deaths and 13,058 injuries. It said the January–August total was 55% higher than in the same period of 2025.
What we know
Long-range weapons remained the leading cause of civilian casualties in August, while short-range drones were the main cause near the front line, according to HRMMU.
What is disputed or not yet verified
The same report lists public allegations of casualties in Russian-occupied territory and in the Russian Federation but says the mission could not independently verify the vast majority because of a lack of independent sources and access.
